Rockies 6, Mets 2. McCarthy Grand Slam Breaks It Open. Queens Falls at Coors.

Colorado made a statement. The Mets couldn’t answer.

New York carried a 2-0 lead into the middle innings and couldn’t hold it. The Rockies clawed back with runs in the fourth and sixth, then Jake McCarthy stepped up in the eighth and hit his first career grand slam — and just like that it was 6-2. Coors Field did Coors Field things, and the Mets came out on the wrong end.

Christian Scott took the ball for the Mets. Jose Quintana held them to two runs over 5⅔ innings for Colorado. When the Mets bullpen handed it to Craig Kimbrel in the late innings, the Rockies pounced. That’s the game.

The McCarthy slam was the backbreaker. First career grand slam. Right down the right-field line, just staying fair. The Mets challenged it. The call stood. Five runs on one swing of a bat by a guy Queens had probably never heard of before today.

Having a lead at Coors means nothing if you can’t protect it. The Mets have been here before this season — build something, let it slip. The Rockies had lost six in a row coming in. They needed this. New York handed it to them.

The work continues. Back to Queens soon enough.
